Fall Pests: 5 To Watch Out For! | Sound Shore Moms of Westchester

You may think since the weather is cooling off, pests like bugs and other critters will start disappearing—but sadly, it isn’t so. According to the experts at Fox Pest Control, some pests actually start appearing in Fall—often looking for shelter or food before temperatures drop. Here are some to be aware of:

  1. Wasps

Wasps are common pests during the summer, but when it gets cool and their food supply (flower nectar, leaves and caterpillars) dwindles as the leaves  fall, wasps get extra nasty. They’re hungry, and like many of us, don’t sleep well in the cold night temps. Wasps that usually left you alone may suddenly sting at random—so it’s essential you take care of any wasp nests on or near your home, using a professional.

  1. Beetles

Stink Bugs, Box Elder Bugs, and Asian Lady Beetles—these are all variations on beetles that gather together during this time in preparation for hibernation.  The problem? They’ll seem to disappear in a good hiding spot like a gutter or underneath siding, and go into “diapause” which slows their body functions—but if temperature, humidity or barometer changes, they’ll start moving around and looking for food, likely in your home.

  1. Rodents

Rats and mice are some of the (unfortunately) most familiar pests. As the weather cools, mice and rats start to wiggle into even the smallest cracks or gaps in a house.  Also unfortunately, they do not hibernate, so will look for food, water and shelter in the safest place they can found—your house. If you hear squeaking sounds (especially at night) or see droppings or chew marks, it’s time to go to the pros.

  1. Spiders

Spiders will head on inside your warm home like all other insects, but they are particularly troublesome because they only need to eat other insects (sometimes even other spiders) and need no water. The best way to keep spiders way? Eliminate their food sources (aka other pests) and knock down their webs.

  1. Cockroaches

These stubborn creatures are some of the hardiest insects on the planet, and they’re very good at finding places to hide. Have any tiny cracks in your cement, gaps around piping or space around windows or doors? Cockroaches will find them, and use them to shelter in your home. They need barely any food or water, making them hard to get rid of once they’re in.
