Meet Helene Stype, a Harrison resident and lifestyle photographer. She specializes in black and white newborn photography at home sessions, and everyday life family films. Where are you from originally and where do you live now?
I’m originally from Paris, France where I was born and raised. I then spent 3 years in Sydney, Australia followed by 9 in London, UK. I have been living in the US since 2017 and now live in Harrison for less than 2 years.
What an exciting background, welcome to Harrison! How many kids do you have and what are their ages?
I have one son. He just turned 4.
What are your favorite shops, restaurants, and things to do here in the Sound Shore?
Having moved here during COVID and finalizing my son’s adoption from Vietnam last year, I didn’t get the chance to really explore the area just yet – but I do like living near the beach and I make sure to grab a croissant at Le Pain Quotidien in Rye at least once a week!
Tell us about how you became a photographer! How did you get started?
I started photography when I was living in London. I took a weekend class which then led me to take the whole professional program offered at the school (London School of Photography). I started photographing my friends, and I used to rent a studio and photograph aspiring dancers and actors on my spare time. Then, when my nephew was born I took photos of my sister with her son… and that was it. I knew that newborn photography was my thing.
What an incredible background! Tell us more about your specialty!
I’m a newborn and family photographer, specializing in black and white at home newborn photography. I’m what we call a lifestyle photographer, meaning that I do not pose my newborns.
What do you love most about being a photographer and where do you get your inspiration?
I love being able to help families capturing their unique story, but also help moms to be part of their families’ photographs. Too often, moms shy away from being in the photos with their kids.
My aim is always to capture meaningful photographs, with a focus on connection. One of the main inspiration to me is being able to show families – but especially new moms – that there is beauty in the chaos of the everyday life. Being a mom myself, I know how some days it can be difficult to recognize how much love and beauty exist in our daily life.
I love that, it’s so true that us moms aren’t in the photos with our kids enough. What’s your favorite part about running your own business?
Freedom – without a doubt. I can decide my working hours which gives me so much flexibility when it comes to spending time with my son.

Any tips for us moms trying to juggle it all?
I’m far from being an expert in doing it all – however, one advice I can give to moms out there is this: don’t be afraid to ask for help, we all need support.
