Meet Melissa Tomlin, the founder of 914PopUps! A Westchester-based entrepreneur with a passion for supporting small businesses, Melissa has built a thriving platform that brings together local vendors through curated pop-up events. With a background in business and a love for fashion, food, fitness, and community, she has created a space where small businesses can grow and connect with new audiences. Keep reading to learn more about her journey, how she balances motherhood and entrepreneurship, and what exciting events are coming up next!

Where are you originally from, and where do you live now?

I’m originally from Niagara Falls, Ontario, Canada. I’ve been living in White Plains, NY, for about 20 years now.

How many children do you have, and what are their ages?

Leila, 17, a senior
Mila, 15, a 10th grader

What is your professional background, and what inspired you to start 914PopUps?

I graduated with a business degree from Babson College and grew up in the hospitality industry in a family of entrepreneurs. I first started a fashion import business and later transitioned into personal shopping. About five years ago, I decided to create a business that combined all the industries I love—food, fashion, fitness, and events—leading to the launch of 914PopUps!

Why do you think pop-up events are so important for small businesses, especially in Westchester?

I currently have connections with more than 800 small businesses. Many owners rely on these businesses as their livelihood, so I strongly believe in shopping small to support local entrepreneurs. It’s an honor to help increase their exposure by connecting them with new audiences through regional pop-ups.

As a mom and business owner, how do you balance running 914PopUps with family life? Any advice for moms trying to juggle it all?

I am super organized—I still use a paper calendar! I’m also very involved in my daughters’ activities and lives. They sometimes come to my events, and as a family, we take part in many community projects together. I’ve taught them how important it is to help others and to be kind and supportive.

Do you have any exciting upcoming events that moms should look out for?

You can check out my Instagram @914popups and website www.914popups.com.
There are over 20 pop-ups planned for the year ahead!

How can local moms and families best support 914PopUps and the vendors you showcase?

Come out and support!
There are pop-ups for all ages.

This year, I’m collaborating with Sharc Creative and Westchester Parks to bring vendors to the free concert series and movie nights at Kensico Dam.

We’re also hosting fun pop-ups in Rye Park with The Barley Beach House, including Wine Walk, Suds on the Sound, and Oktoberfest.

We love to support local businesses! What are your favorite spots in Westchester?

Wow, this one is tough—there are so many amazing local shops and restaurants! Since I live in White Plains, my go-to spots are LOLA New York for a shopping spree, Araras Coffee and More for a great cup of coffee, and Hair Hause for a fresh blowout.

We’re incredibly grateful for our amazing community and the wonderful people and places that make it so special. Explore our Blog page for features that spotlight local businesses and more.
