Meet Sarah and Ana, the sister duo behind Atelier Modern, Sound Shore’s thoughtfully curated art and design studio recently recognized with a Best of Westchester award for Curated Art. Their light-filled space brings together gallery-quality works and functional design pieces, all chosen with intention. We caught up with them to learn more about their story, how Atelier Modern came to be, and what makes their space feel so welcoming to both collectors and everyday shoppers alike.
First off, congrats on winning Best of Westchester for Curated Art! How did it feel to get that recognition?
Thank you. It felt affirming—not just for us, but for the idea that beauty with meaning resonates. We’ve always believed that artful living should be accessible, and this recognition tells us others feel the same.
Can you each share a bit about your background and how the two of you came together to create Atelier Modern?
We’re sisters, and while our paths were different—Ana in fine art and global collecting, Sarah in civic leadership and retail curation—we’ve always shared an eye. Atelier Modern began as a conversation around the dinner table and turned into a shared vision: a space where objects tell stories and design feels personal.
Was owning a curated art and design studio always part of the dream, or did it evolve over time?
It definitely evolved. The seed was always there—a love of beauty, a reverence for craftsmanship—but the idea of turning it into a business came later, when we couldn’t find a place that did both: deeply thoughtful art and functional design.
For someone who’s never been, how would you describe Atelier Modern?
It’s part gallery, part home store, part studio. A light-filled space where every piece has a story, and nothing feels off-limits. We want it to feel like stepping into someone’s very considered, very beautiful home—but with the invitation to take a piece of it with you.
What makes your space different from a traditional gallery or home decor store?
We blur the lines. You’ll find museum-quality works next to equally beautiful objects meant to be used daily. We’re as interested in emotional resonance as we are in visual impact. And we’re here—not hovering, but available—to help you figure out what fits you.
What types of services or experiences can a local mom expect when visiting—are appointments needed or can you just pop in?
Pop in anytime—we love a spontaneous visit. We offer quick styling advice on the spot, or you can book a session if you’re looking for more in-depth support—like finding the right piece for your space, building a collection, or designing around a favorite object. We also offer gift-wrapping, curbside pickup, and shipping to make life a little easier.
How do you go about finding the artists and designers you feature?
It’s part instinct, part research, and a lot of conversation. We seek out work that feels intentional—whether it’s a rising ceramicist in upstate New York or a printmaker in Paris. If it sparks something in us, chances are it will in someone else too.
Do you offer styling advice or help with placement for pieces in people’s homes?
Absolutely. We’re happy to help—from “Where should this go?” to full-room styling. Sometimes it’s just about giving you confidence in your own instincts. Other times, it’s about curating a complete moment.
For someone decorating their home and maybe feeling a little overwhelmed—where’s a good place to start when it comes to adding art or statement pieces?
Start with what moves you. A piece that makes you pause, or smile, or tilt your head. From there, build slowly. One sculptural candle holder. A framed work that shifts with the light. You don’t need to get it all right at once—just begin with intention.
Are there any trends in art or home design that you’re loving right now?
There’s a definite return to warmth and texture—things that feel good to touch and live with. We’re seeing more homes carved into cozy, intentional spaces, layered with sculptural forms, translucent finishes, and rich, natural materials.
Artists are reinterpreting Art Nouveau and Art Deco through a modern lens—flowing lines, moody hues, and just the right amount of ornament. And there’s a growing appreciation for pieces that feel personal and made to last. That’s always been our sweet spot: objects with soul, beauty, and function—ready to be lived with.
