Smoothies Made Easy! | Sound Shore Moms of Westchester

I don’t know about you but I love a good smoothie. As a mom, it’s a great way to pack in a lot of nutrients into one easy and portable meal (not to mention my daughter loves them too!). But the idea of making them at home can definitely be overwhelming. Having all the ingredients on hand, taking out the blender, cleaning the blender, making sure that it’s actually good for you and not just a big fat sugar bomb – it’s a lot. I’ve been making smoothies at home for a long time and over the years I’ve learned a few tricks to make it easy (and healthy!). Don’t have time to make a smoothie when you’ve got a ton of other things to do? We’ve also included a couple of our favorite places to grab a delicious smoothie on-the-go in the Sound Shore!

GO FROZEN

Using fresh fruit and veggies in your smoothies can be expensive and hard to keep up with. To avoid waste and cut costs you can:

  • Buy already frozen fruit and veggies at the store.
  • Freeze your fresh fruits and veggies before they expire. My bananas have been getting ripe really quickly this summer and I can’t keep up with it so before they turn I put them into individual freezer snack bags to use for future smoothies. I also freeze my fresh spinach. I stick the whole plastic container right into the freezer.

USE ICE TRAYS

I’ll bet that when you make smoothies you often have some leftover in the pitcher that often goes to waste. Take that extra smoothie mix and pour it into an ice cube tray to use in the future for a quick and easy smoothie – no need to mix a ton of ingredients next time!

BLEND TO CLEAN

The thought of hand washing the blender every day is daunting to me – until I discovered you can blend it clean. Fill the blender with hot water and soap until about halfway and then blend. It fully cleans the blender and all you need to do is rinse! This was a huge game changer for me!

MY FAVORITE SMOOTHIE

I follow Kelly Leveque’s Fab Four Smoothie approach where she suggests making your recipe with four important components: Protein, Fat, Fiber + Greens. Here’s my favorite go-to combo:

12 oz Unsweetened Almond Milk

2 Scoops Chocolate Fudge Orgain Protein Powder

1 Tablespoon of Almond Butter

1 Teaspoon of Chia Seeds

A bunch of spinach

**Sometimes I will also add in half a banana and a splash of coffee!
