One of the best parts about living in the Sound Shore area of Westchester, NY is how easy it is to get out on the water. My husband loves to fish, so every year we celebrate his birthday with a sunset fishing trip with Sound Bound Charters. We usually book the porgy trip out of New Rochelle with some friends, load up a few coolers, and enjoy a fun, laid-back night on the water.
This year, we decided to switch things up and bring the kids along for the first time. Instead of our usual trip that goes late into the night, we chose an earlier fluke trip out of Mamaroneck since it was shorter. My youngest is only 5, and this was the perfect decision since it was more manageable for little ones and it only went until dark. We didn’t catch as many fish, but it was such a great intro to fishing for the kids. If you’re thinking about bringing little kids, I’d definitely recommend starting with one of the shorter trips. If your kids can handle a later night, the porgy trip is a blast!
Brendan and his team are always so friendly and helpful. I’m not an experienced fisherman by any means, and they’ve always been incredibly patient, offering great tips and making sure everyone is comfortable and having a good time. On this trip, they were just as amazing with the kids….encouraging them, showing them how to use the rods, and celebrating every catch, no matter the size. It made the whole experience feel extra special and fun for their first time on a fishing trip!
The boats are spacious, with indoor cabins, outdoor seating, and bathrooms on board, so there’s always a comfortable spot to take a break, enjoy the views, or have a snack. We always bring sandwiches on board for dinner!
On past trips, our first few catches were usually small throwbacks (like the cute one pictured here) but later in the evening, the boat would be full of people hauling in huge fish and filling up their buckets.
